The Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity - Charity Case Study

December 29, 2023

Over the last few years, increasing concerns have been addressed over the well-being and overall morale within the Royal Marine divisions. A study conducted (2017) has shown 35% of Royal Marines surveyed, said they were dissatisfied with Service life in general.

With that in mind, the Royal Navy have also faced their own issues more recently over the last 2 years, as a notable increase in resignations and slow down in recruitment in the last 18 months means sailor numbers are declining.

Therefore it is crucial to know that a charity dedicated to assisting the lives and most importantly giving assurance to those serving in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines exists!

Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity

The Royal Navy and Royal Marines charity is the principal charity of The Royal Navy. We exist to support sailors, marines and their families, for life.

Beneficiaries lie at the heart of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity's purpose, it is our duty to remain focused on their needs. Since 2007, we have funded projects and facilities that boost morale for those who serve today. We also distribute millions of pounds annually to military charities which care for the children, families and veterans of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.

Our Vision

A world in which our sailors, marines, and their families are valued and supported, for life.

Our Mission

To raise funds, working with others, to provide the support needed to our serving and former members of the Naval Service and their families.

Our Values

Beneficiary focused

We will use the best evidence available to achieve maximum impact on the lives and morale of those who serve today, or who have ever served, and their families.

Commitment

We will demonstrate the highest ambition and commitment for our cause.

Integrity

We will act with honesty and transparency in all our activities.

Inclusiveness

We will recognise and celebrate diversity in the sector.

Teamwork

We will always behave in a way that strengthens the sector.

Our Aims

To provide support using our funding pathways:
THROUGH LIFE

We help throughout life and channel our funds to where need is identified at whatever stage. From elderly care, through mental health provision for children's charities, our outcomes demonstrate tangible differences at whichever stage in life that a safety net is needed.

FIT FOR LIFE

Delivering sporting capability through our Naval Service Sports Charity. By doing so we improve morale, support the "Navy Fit" campaign and maintain the diversity and vitality of all our sporting associations.

QUALITY OF LIFE

Focusing on our serving community we are putting out junior rates, other ranks and families at the top of our agenda. Our outcomes will be to show improvements to the lives of those in uniform and to their families.

END OF LIFE

When the worst happens and a loved one dies while serving we provide immediate and unquestioned financial assistance.

With years of constant cut-throat and hard hitting battles, a Rugby player's career isn't short of any form of risk for a serious injury to occur. For those who unfortunately have their careers ended prematurely, often they find themselves asking 'what's next?' No athlete should face this constant uncertainty and lack of support just because the sport they play involves more risks. However one charity has dedicated its time, making sure no Rugby player should be forgotten and left to suffer. Restart RPA (The Rugby Players Association) Restart is the official charity of The Rugby Players Association (RPA) and we are dedicated to supporting elite men's and women's rugby players suffering from serious injury, illness or hardship. We provide financial and practical support to players and their families during difficult times, including help with the cost of medical treatment, rehabilitation equipment and disability support. We’re also there when players need emotional support to help with mental health issues, by providing a 24/7 Confidential Counselling Service. We receive no government or lottery funding so the work we do is funded entirely through voluntary donations and fundraising activity. We completely rely on the support of businesses, rugby supporters, fundraisers, generous donors and the players themselves to raise funds each year for those in need. A considerable amount of pro bono support is given by the Rugby Players Association including staff time, office space and fundraising opportunities at high-profile commercial events. Former England and Wasps player, Damian Hopley was forced to retire from the professional game in 1998 due to a career-ending knee injury. The lack of support available to professional players at that time motivated Damian to found the RPA later that same year and then Restart as the charitable arm of the organisation in 2001. We work simultaneously with the RPA to represent players, giving them the voice they deserve and also providing them with support when they have nowhere else to turn.
