Restart RPA - Charity Case Study

With years of constant cut-throat and hard hitting battles, a Rugby player's career isn't short of any form of risk for a serious injury to occur.

For those who unfortunately have their careers ended prematurely, often they find themselves asking 'what's next?' No athlete should face this constant uncertainty and lack of support just because the sport they play involves more risks.

However one charity has dedicated its time, making sure no Rugby player should be forgotten and left to suffer.

Restart RPA (The Rugby Players Association)

Restart is the official charity of The Rugby Players Association (RPA) and we are dedicated to supporting elite men's and women's rugby players suffering from serious injury, illness or hardship.

We provide financial and practical support to players and their families during difficult times, including help with the cost of medical treatment, rehabilitation equipment and disability support. We’re also there when players need emotional support to help with mental health issues, by providing a 24/7 Confidential Counselling Service.

We receive no government or lottery funding so the work we do is funded entirely through voluntary donations and fundraising activity. We completely rely on the support of businesses, rugby supporters, fundraisers, generous donors and the players themselves to raise funds each year for those in need. A considerable amount of pro bono support is given by the Rugby Players Association including staff time, office space and fundraising opportunities at high-profile commercial events.

Former England and Wasps player, Damian Hopley was forced to retire from the professional game in 1998 due to a career-ending knee injury. The lack of support available to professional players at that time motivated Damian to found the RPA later that same year and then Restart as the charitable arm of the organisation in 2001.

We work simultaneously with the RPA to represent players, giving them the voice they deserve and also providing them with support when they have nowhere else to turn.

'Innovation is our only route for success'

The past twelve months haven't been easy for most, soaring food costs, a growing energy crisis combined with an increasing inflation rate leading to yet another cost of living crisis in the UK. With a general election imminent, the rate of those who desperately need further help financially will continue to spiral out of control. Away from the country's volatile economic situation, continuing social unrest has also swept the country. Perhaps not every issue we currently face can be resolved overnight or even within the next 365 days. However, for every crisis or nationwide problem we may face, there is always a solution! One thing for certain though, the need for Fundraising will increase!

Our fundraising efforts here over the last year at Go Fundraising, have seen us contribute and help a vast amount of various causes and charities. From helping to rehouse those in sport who need a new shelter to call home, to being able to open the doors at the privileged Hurlingham Club in the benefit of helping local children play more sport, to finally making someone's last wish come true. Go Fundraising were able to accomplish all of the above, with these just a minute example of how your ever present auction generosity has made such an incredible difference.

This isn't the beginning of the end of our fundraising mission, as we know charities and organisations are constantly inundated with further requests for help. Our continuous aim of providing fundraising support and crucially a platform to reach their donation targets will be ever present in our efforts across 2024.

Fundamentally our commitment and overall goal to fundraising won't change, however how can we enhance our fundraising capabilities further ?

'Inspiration (noun)

A person or thing that is the reason why somebody creates or does something.'

By using Fundraising, it can open many doors. It creates opportunities and chances to the less fortunate and provides economic and emotional support in the areas it's needed. Something that won't change this year will be our continued drive to push the need for Fundraising.

A Silent Auction is a superb way of creating a fun, competitive and engaging form of fundraising at any event. However one aspect that we're looking to build upon this year is, if you want to host a Silent Auction, you don't necessarily need a physical event to do so. The power of the worldwide web and its endless amount of network streams, can only simply enhance the ability and crucially the potential amount of bidders your Silent Auction could reach. Your wildest donation goals and targets could be reached through people not just sitting in a big hotel gala room but in the comfort of their very own living rooms.

Online QR Code Silent Auctions are not new by any means, but perhaps a debate could be raised that they are either undervalued or even misunderstood to some event organisers.

Our continued drive to push the use of technology to our new and existing charity partners, is one of our aims to make sure that they are fully aware of how online Silent Auctions can be a perfectly capable tool for attracting new donors and crucially reaching donation targets faster.

Last year saw us become the official Fundraising partner to the Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic at the Hurlingham Club. This new partnership, will also continue during the 2024 edition of this immaculately organised pre -Wimbledon Tennis Tournament. With ambitions of not just raising our donation target once again, but also a fundraising collaboration with the existing fellow sponsorship partners. By promoting this initiative amongst sponsors for them to donate exclusive auction items, we believe this will be beneficial not just for the individuals bidding in the auction but also a collective effort from the sponsors perspective in helping support the Hurlingham Foundation. Further implementing the message on why we are hosting a silent auction and crucially where the raised funds end up.

From day one in our Fundraising mission, it has been detrimental to know how impactful our Silent Auction Fundraising is. This of course won't change now it's 2024. However this year we will make a more strenuous effort in building new relationships within the Environmental charitable sector. We will venture and look into new areas where charity is needed the most, not just domestically but across the planet, where we feel that our Fundraising capabilities can benefit the most.

2024 and beyond - Future Proofing with Fundraising (Case Study)

One potential new form of fundraising that could become more prominent not just in the year ahead, but in the next decade, could be the use of Fundraising in the Gaming industry. Of course this is world's apart from the traditional physical event fundraising we conduct throughout the year. However we are carefully keeping our finger on the pulse and asking how we can incorporate a gaming element within our Silent Auctions. A recent study (The 2022 Donor Pulse Spring Report) showed that 36% of potential millennial and Gen Z donors said they would give more if it were easier to donate. By using gaming, this could be the answer and way into the Fundraising world.

The Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity - Charity Case Study

Over the last few years, increasing concerns have been addressed over the well-being and overall morale within the Royal Marine divisions. A study conducted (2017) has shown 35% of Royal Marines surveyed, said they were dissatisfied with Service life in general.

With that in mind, the Royal Navy have also faced their own issues more recently over the last 2 years, as a notable increase in resignations and slow down in recruitment in the last 18 months means sailor numbers are declining.

Therefore it is crucial to know that a charity dedicated to assisting the lives and most importantly giving assurance to those serving in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines exists!

Our History

Beams was established as a charity in 1996 by a group of parents. They believed that they could deliver better support for their disabled child by working together, rather than the help they were currently getting through the local authority. They became directly accountable to the parents, carers and young people who accessed their services.

Meeting those who have been affected by a significant life changing moment is unfortunately a common occurrence within the Fundraising landscape.

However, getting to meet someone who's significant life changing moment inspired them to help hundreds of families affected by the same horrific moment they had to endure, is yet another example on why we know Fundraising is so powerful!

No family should have to endure the pain and suffering that many encounter during child birth.

But for those who do, there is light at the end of the long tunnel.

New Life Special Care Babies

Every year in the UK over 100,000 babies are born premature or require medical attention.

New Life is a registered charity that is dedicated to raising money for special care baby units across the UK. We have helped many hospitals including, Swindon, Reading, Yeovil, Bristol, Oxford, Nottingham, and Basingstoke.

The Charity was launched by Trevor Goodall in 1995 in memory of his sons Joshua and Samuel who were born 3 months early weighing just 1lb 1oz and 1lb 3oz. Sadly, they both died after a week, but their struggle inspired Trevor to do something and to make a difference.

In 2021 , Trevor and his fundraisers hit the incredible £1m goal. But it won't stop there.

We are now embarking on an exciting new phase with two aims: to bring an Ambassador onboard to help raise the profile and to reach £2m .

Our mission

To provide neo-natal equipment to special care baby units across the UK improving the chances of premature babies surviving and thriving.

How we do it

We raise funds through sponsorship, donations, and fundraising events which are then awarded as grants or direct purchase of equipment to neonatal units upon successful application.

Over the last 26 years, we have forged close working relationships with many neonatal units throughout the UK. These hospitals know they can approach us with requests to fund new life-saving equipment either in part or in full. We try our very best to meet all these requests.

We also work in collaboration with other organisations which enables funds to be raised more quickly and helps to get the word out. We recently worked in collaboration with Brighter Futures at Great Western Hospital to raise £175,000 for five new incubators.

We provide financial and personal support to servicemen and women to help them make the transition from military service back into civilian life.

This includes designated transition courses using the sport of Rugby as a means to assist with this transition process as well as providing financial support to individuals by way of a formal grant application process.

Why the Rugby Community?

Rugby for Heroes works with the rugby community to raise funds and awareness for military personnel who are making the transition to civilian life. We are committed to providing financial and personal support, to help individuals overcome the many challenges that this transition presents.

There are some obvious parallels that can be drawn between the UK’s Armed Forces and the sport of rugby – the traditions and core values of: leadership, teamwork, commitment, discipline, courage, respect, loyalty and camaraderie are all values in which the sport of rugby and the military unite behind and aspire to, and it is these values that RUGBY FOR HEROES champions.

What are the biggest issues younger genrations are facing today in 2023 ?

With a combination of new generational pressures with conflicting deeper social issues, many people now believe it is a crucial time to help the youth progress into modern day society.

One British sporting figure has made this his own personal mission, by pushing boundaries and making sure that those who deserve a second chance get the opportunity.

Under the leadership of Former Rugby World Cup 2003 Winner Lawrence Dallaglio, the Dallaglio Rugby Works Charity are building possiblities for those who deserve them.

"Supporting young people using the power of Rugby"

At the Dallaglio RugbyWorks we work with teenagers that for a variety of reasons, find themselves excluded from mainstream education and so reducing their life chances.

Through an intensive long term skills development programme based on the values of rugby, we go into the Alternative Provision (Pupil Referral Units) on a weekly basis, working with the young people over a period of three years to ensure that they get into sustained Employment,Education or Training. Government stats currently indicate that only 1.4% of young people in Alternative Provision achieve 5 GCSEs (including Maths & Eng) compared to 53% in mainstream.

Failure to improve outcomes for this population segment comes at a high societal cost: a staggering 80% of young people in the criminal justice system were excluded from school. But, our award winning programme, RugbyWorks, is making a difference to these young people, over 82% are still in sustained education after 12 months of leaving AP, this is compared to 57% of their peers not on our programme.

The Problem - On average, 129 young people are excluded from school each week. The lifetime cost to the state of permanently excluding one young person is estimated to be £370,000 , let alone the personal cost to a young persons future prospects.

Our Mission - Our mission is to ensure that those young people failed by mainstream education, have an equal chance to be in Education, Employment, or Training (EET) post 18.

Cure Leukaemia - Charity Case Study

That's exactly what Cure Leukaemia has been able to discover over the last twenty years, whilst saving thousands of lives in the meantime!

Like all great campaigns, they need constant resources and innovation to create the new medical breakthroughs!

Cure Leukaemia was established in 2003 by Professor Charlie Craddock CBE and patients Graham Silk and Michael Woolley to allow patients with blood cancer in the Birmingham region to access remarkably effective new treatments which were then becoming available. Since then, Cure Leukaemia has been able to expand to a national level, and we are now able to offer potential life-saving treatment to patients across the UK. Thanks to our huge CL Family of dedicated fundraisers, we’ve been able to continue to grow each year and connect more patients to potentially lifesaving treatment.

The Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP).

In January 2020, Cure Leukaemia began a 3-year, £3,000,000 commitment to funding the national Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP). The TAP Network allows patients to be connected with world-class and potentially lifesaving treatment that would otherwise not be available to them through standard care.

The TAP network allows a catchment area of over 20,000,000 patients to be connected with world-class and potentially lifesaving treatments that would otherwise not be available to them through standard care – with over 40,000 people diagnosed with blood cancer every year.

Combining the greatest sports legacies with a clear mission to combat hatred in all forms against young people, The Laureus Sport charity has been able to use iconic names in the sports landscape, to fulfil their objectives over the past two decades! Not just an honorary sports award given to the greatest athlete each year, Laureus Sport with its 'Sport for Good Campaign' has significantly influenced the lives in warzones, had impact with gender equality and even also supported a nationwide acceleration for sport program in Sweden. Our privileged opportunity to help Laureus, was given on the 1st June at the Vorto Trading Golf Day at the picturesque London Golf Club, by providing our silent auction and auction management services on the day. A superb effort of fundraising on the day, contributed to a new donation of thousands of pounds being raised for this incredible charitable organisation.

We are the only charity that is 100% dedicated to our construction community in the UK and Ireland and a crucial element of our strategy is to provide free and easy access to a wide range of pro-active resources to support the wellbeing of our workforce.'

Two construction workers take their own life every single working day, we need to take action now! Just one small step can make all the difference.

From day one we have known how influential and important this great charity is for the construction industry.

Go Fundraising truly believes that the Lighthouse Club has made vast differences amongst the construction industry with their unique support options and continued help across the whole countries construction industry.

With many events supporting the charity this year in our calendar, 2023 looks destined to be another tremendous year of fundraising!

The Lighthouse Club

The Construction Industry Helpline is managed and funded by the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity. The charity has been delivering charitable welfare and support to the construction community since 1956. The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity is funded by the industry, for the industry.

We receive no public funding and rely on the generosity and support of the industry and our volunteer network of regional clubs and fundraisers to allow us to deliver our charitable services.

What we do

The Construction Industry Helpline provides a 24/7 safety net for all construction workers and their families in the UK and Ireland. It is a charitable service funded by the industry, for the industry and provides;

The helpline is funded by The Lighthouse Club which has been delivering charitable welfare and support to the construction community since 1956, who in turn are funded by and supported by the businesses and people in our industry and our network of 21 regional volunteer clubs.

Reposm - Charity Case Study

But heroes age. Their skills fade. So does the memory of them.

The Reposm Charity has been established to help and house those who have fallen on hard times, and deserves the support of all those whose lives- including my own- have been enhanced by sport.”

Former Prime Minister Sir John Major, an avid supporter of Reposm, powerfully pointed out that even our very own sporting heroes go through rough times too.

We're always fortunate to be involved with sporting related dinners/lunches. To support a charity that gives so much back to retired sportsmen/women, and crucially continues our vision of curing as many diseases/illnesses through the power of fundraising as possible!

'We are looking to provide a unique solution to a desperate problem.'

The benefits Reposm will offer in their Sheltered Housing schemes are life changing. By providing such affordable housing, we will be addressing serious issues such as loneliness, depression, peace of mind and safety.

There is currently no organisation responding to the acute needs of retired sportspeople.

Reposm Sports Housing Trust will fill this gap, and, in doing so, will be a major player in preventing the onset of Dementia.

It is well documented that an increasing number of retired sports people are suffering from dementia. And much has been written about the lack of action being taken across the sporting landscape to combat – or trying to prevent this pernicious disease.

Reposm was established in response to the troubled futures being faced by so many after the curtain has fallen on their careers. Research has proved that the onset of dementia is closely linked to loneliness, homelessness, social isolation and depression. By providing Sheltered Housing for sportspeople who have fallen on hard times, Reposm will play a major part in the prevention of dementia, by providing a supportive environment, living with like-minded neighbours in a happy community environment.

Switch the Play Foundation is the UK’s only charity dedicated to supporting all sportspeople to successfully transition into life outside of sport. We were set up in 2014 by a group of sport specialists and former sportspeople. In 2020, we gained charity status, enabling us to help more people than ever before. Our vision is of a world where every sportsperson fulfils their potential at every stage of their lives. Our mission is to empower sportspeople to be their best through and beyond sport by providing person-centred training, wellbeing and transition support. Golf Day Fundraising

With British Summer time officially here, it's time to get the golf clubs back out and hit the links.

A golf day is the perfect opportunity to network, have some fun and most importantly fundraise.

The Silent Auction option is a great opportunity and way to raise funds for a chosen charity on a golf day.

A successful silent auction will have a combination of unique memorabilia, original artwork, bespoke travel experiences and bucket list hospitality. This will guarantee that the individuals who are present at the Golf Day, have enough options to browse at and bid for! Creating a competitive bidding atmosphere is crucial and this ultimately begins with tailoring the right auction prizes in the pre auction production.

If your golf day has been pre launched, and you have chosen to use an online bidding auction with QR Code, then a popular option is to launch the auction the night before the event. This will allow the players to take a good look and of course a chance to pre-bid, raising money before the first drive has even been hit!

With our event management team, we will make sure that every golf day will have the Go Fundraising presence. Our hosting team will be present on the day, to help with any questions regarding the silent auction. They will also set up a display presentation of some of the memorabilia and artwork included in the auction, this will be a great visual extra in the dining/hosting room and almost certainly catch the eyes of everyone in the room!

Make A Wish UK - Charity Case Study

One of our recently selected charities, Make A Wish UK, has changed the lives of many, most importantly giving those in need a lasting memory they deserve!

Make A Wish

Currently, around 63,000 children in the UK are eligible for a wish because they have a life-limiting or life-threatening condition. From the moment they are diagnosed, the simple pleasures of childhood and family life are replaced by worry, disruption, medical appointments, financial worries and isolation.

Make-A-Wish exists to put those issues to one side by empowering a child with the chance to choose a wish that's unique to them when so much else has been decided for them because of their health needs. In doing so, a wish creates hope, happiness and memories for the whole family to cherish.

Whether it's starring in their own films, feeding tigers, meeting a celebrity hero, or having a bedroom redesigned just so, our wishes are varied, personal and life-changing. We go above and beyond to grant amazing wishes to amazing children when they need it most. Because a child's life shouldn't be about illness, hospitals and diagnosis - it should be about wonder, joy and hope.

Big Love - Charity Case Study

This will never change, as our fundraising mission continues to make a difference for all who need it the most!

Big Love

Big Love was set up in 2019 to initially create opportunities and hope for children that were caught in appalling poverty and who are extremely vulnerable to human trafficking and being prostituted in Romania. We have set up barbering courses for children to help them learn practical skill and are in the process of setting up beauty courses for girls. We regularly run football workshops on the multiple trips we run each year and distribute kits. We have also helped pioneer a school for Ukrainian children in Romania. Furthermore, we have supported two children centres which support 50+ children a day with breakfast and lunch clubs and, crucially education in between. With our latest project funding for a large artic lorry which distributed emergency aid to Ukraine via Moldova.

Locally, in Chelmsford, we are pioneering self-esteem courses in a local drug and alcohol centre helping those with addiction. We are running football/mentoring courses for children in High schools and have worked with the local authority to deliver mentoring sessions for children caught in the county lines. It's our hope to expand this work throughout the year. Finally, we look to aim to continue working in a college specifically with children with additional needs.
